Hybrid tea roses (rosa x hybrida) are the product of crossing hybrid perpetual roses and the old-fashioned tea roses. They develop large, high buds and tall, straight stems. Perfect for cutting, they generally produce only one blossom at the end of each stem. Click here to learn more about their history.

fun fact:did you know you can train hybrid tea roses to grow on arbors and trellises?

Choosing a location

Hybrid tea roses grow quickly and can reach their mature size of three to eight feet tall within a few years. Give them enough space to thrive and plant in well-drained soil. They work well along fences and like to be grown in sunny positions which shelter strong wind or scorching heat.

Watering and pruning

You can plant them year-round, ideally in fall or in early spring when they are still in dormancy. Newly planted roses will need watering every few days. Established roses need less frequent watering unless in a hot, dry climate. Hybrid tea roses enjoy a proper pruning each spring... keeps them healthy and encourages flowering!

Fertilizing your roses

Hybrid tea roses benefit from regular fertilizing, especially while they are getting established, and appreciate rose fertilizer high in phosphorus more than nitrogen-rich food. In cooler climates, surround the base of your roses with organic mulch before the first frost. This protects your roses and also slowly nourishes the plant, as it slowly breaks down.

Keeping pests away

There are many natural remedies to reduce pests on your rose plants, such as dabbing natural neem oil around the base of your roses. An effective age old concoction is to fill a pump spray bottle with warm water, organic dish soap, a little baking soda, vinegar and tea tree oil... Simply spray it on the roses and do not forget the underside of the leaves. Sprinkling a little diatomaceous earth around the base is an added repellent!

It's important to know your hardiness zone before purchasing any type of rose. Be sure to check your local plant nurseries to see which varieties of Hybrid Tea Roses are available and hardy in your area!

Escape to the Garden

I live in a rustic cottage on the border of Maine and Canada near my family's farmhouse, and enjoy designing and creating Philippians 4:8 content that also speaks to the spirituality of humanity. Everything we listen to influences the spirit as Ephesians 6:12 says, "For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places".Whenever we walk away from watching media, it's important to ask how our priorities may have shifted, always considering the spirit behind the change to identify seeds of deception and influences that do not represent truth.A most sincere THANKS for supporting my small shop and channels. I try to source my products from America or friendly countries since we vote with the services we choose, and the companies we purchase from, much more than we ever do at the polls. I love reading your comments and am encouraged by our daily interactions with one another!

The History of the Hybrid Tea Rose:

Henry Bennett and Jean-Baptiste André Guillot were the first rosarians to experiment with crossing Hybrid Perpetuals with Tea Roses. From the Hybrid Perpetuals, they took the long stems and the large blooms. From the Teas, they took their continual flowering and long petals. The first recognised Hybrid Tea Rose was a seedling called ‘La France’, which was introduced in 1867.The cultivar that made hybrid tea roses the most popular class of garden rose of the 20th century was ‘Peace’ introduced at the end of World War II.

This is your daily reminder to stop... and smell the roses!
